Science Seminar Series                  Friday July 22, 2-3:00pm

Join us each month as we highlight San Diego Botanic Garden’s commitment to and support of current plant-based research.

This month we will feature SDBG's Senior Director of Science and Conservation, Colin Khoury, as he discusses his research regarding the changing potato crop diversity.

Crop diversity  variation among crop species, their varieties, and individual plants – provides a foundation for productivity, resilience and adaptive capacity in agriculture. This diversity is widely considered to have declined precipitously during the past hundred years due to economic and agricultural development, globalization, and environmental change, but the magnitude, causes, and significance of this loss remains poorly understood.

In this presentation, Colin will describe exciting research from the Andean highlands of Peru, where an international team, including SDBG scientists, are collaborating to understand how and why diversity in potato – a crop domesticated in the region and cultivated for over 8000 years by Andean Indigenous communities – is changing. By revisiting the same communities and families whose potato diversity was documented by previous researchers up to 70 years in the past, new insights on change in one of the world's most important food crops are coming to fruition.

San Diego Botanic Garden operates according to current County and State guidelines. In accordance with guidance from the County of San Diego and the California Department of Public Health, SDBG encourages visitors to wear masks indoors.
